Get ‘Red’-dy for perfect lips

Visage Designs by Cynthia, LLC

Red lipstick instantly glamorizes your look, but can be challenging to wear. Choosing the right shade and applying it correctly are the keys to wearing this classic look -- while feeling confident in this bold, seductive color.

If you’re ready to take your look up to the red level, here are a few guidelines:

• Choose the best shade of red for you by coordinating it with your skin tone. If your complexion is darker or yellow, warm reds work best. Warm means slightly yellow or brownish based (a ripe tomato or red delicious apple). Rosy skin looks best in blue-based reds (red grapes, plums or cherries). Very fair complexions look best in true reds (equal yellow and blue base, like a strawberry or candy apple). Very dark complexions look best with deep or burgundy reds (plums, pomegranate or red wine).

• Applying red to dry, flaky lips will ruin your look. Create a perfect base by gently exfoliating lips with a baby toothbrush and Vaseline. Wipe away excess and dab lips with a flesh-tone primer like Mac Cosmetics’ double duty Prep and Prime Eye ($17) and lightly powder. This will stop your lipstick from changing color, as well as hold it in place.

• Line the inner rim of your lips without going outside your natural lip line with a nude lipliner like Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Liner ($6) in Nude or matching shade of red liner, like Mac Cosmetics’ Redd ($14) before applying the lipstick. For extra staying power, fill in lips with the red liner, too.

• Red is a strong and lasting pigment, so precision is the key to keeping red lipstick from smudging and staining. Apply a small amount with a lip brush from the center of your lips to just over the inner edge of the liner and blend. Blot with a tissue and reapply in the same way, press and blend with your fingertip, then blot one last time. Sticky and creamy glosses will cause red lipstick to migrate faster, so try using a light, shimmery eye or cheek color like Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick in Beige -- the lightest of the multi-colored shades -- ($39) just in the center of the lips for the look of gloss without the mess.

• Keep the rest of your makeup minimal when wearing red lips to complete this elegant, sexy and timeless look. Even skin tone, a sweep of shimmery shadow, well-defined brows and a coat or two of mascara are all you need to show off your red, luscious lips!
