Freda Hardage’s days usually start at 6 a.m. and don’t end until at least 7 p.m. It’s all part of her plan to give back and be a good neighbor.

And 12-hour days are all part of being a heavily involved volunteer and business woman in the community.

During the day, her role is director of the Alpharetta Medical Campus, coordinating its five buildings and largest outpatient campus, and Foundation Services for Northside Hospital.

After admiring a neighbor who was a nurse, Hardage was inspired to join the medical community.

“I thought she had a cool job,” she said. “When I was in high school she would let me volunteer in her clinic. I really wanted to be a nurse.”

While still wearing her nursing hat every day, Hardage said her job consists of managing multiple services. And a component of her job with the foundation brings a philanthropic side to the hospital.

“We look at how we can give back to the community,” Hardage said. “It’s a give and take on the foundation side. We have events where we raise money for special causes. Then we also give over $2 million a year back to the community to support the nonprofits. We want to support the community we serve.”

And even with spending most of her time at work, Hardage said she loves what she does.

“I enjoy what I do, and I think that’s how you find a happy balance in life,” she said. “If you’re going to work every day and you enjoy what you’re doing, you make time to get things done.”

And with what free time she has, she often can be found serving her community. She is involved with various groups including the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce Executive Board, MARTA Board of Directors, Johns Creek Beautification Board of Directors, President Emeritus of the Board of Directors at the Drake House, Legislative Council for State Bridge Crossing Elementary and on the Leadership Council for the Atlanta American Cancer Society.

What makes the community great are all the opportunities its people have been given, Hardage said.

“Everyone needs to give back in one way or another and try to help someone less fortunate or who doesn’t have the opportunities we have,” she said. “It’s something I feel passionate about and I want to try to help my neighbors and even people I don’t even know. If I can make it a better place to live or work, I would like to do that. I’d like to think I left a little mark on North Fulton and that I was a good neighbor.” ■
