Before We Were Yours portrays the story of the Foss children, stolen from their parents’ shanty boat, The Arcadia, on the Mississippi River in 1936. Years later some of the children, now adults, are brought back together. The story begins when a young attorney has a connection with one of the ladies while visiting a local nursing home.

Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings lived a magical life aboard their family's Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night to deliver her twin siblings, Rill is left in charge — until strangers arrive. Torn from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children's Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are promised they will soon be returned to their parents — Rill quickly realizes the truth. Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty.

Years pass, and May Crandall (Rill Foss) is now a resident in a nursing home in Aiken, S.C.

During a political tour with her father, a young attorney, Avery Stafford, experiences a strange connection with May Crandall and can’t seem to shake it. The picture on May’s night stand is of a woman that looks just like her grandmother, but where is the connection?

Her decision to investigate May’s life begins a journey through long-hidden family history, affecting Avery’s own goals and plans.

Avery joins forces with single dad Trent Turner, with whom she feels a spark.

The story is interwoven with the abuse and separation the Foss siblings suffered at the hands of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society, a real-life orphanage that profited from essentially kidnapping children from poor families and placing them with prominent people.

It’s a powerful tale of family, sisters, and secrets. An amazing story of how they reconnected after being torn apart.

The miraculous novel ending makes you feel so happy that May can finally live in peace. “You know I’ll always come on Thursdays. Sisters Day.” said May.

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to read this novel. There is nothing more important than truth and family.

Before We Were Yours will be released June 2017.
